Update: Substack, Marx For Sale, and more.
July 2023 Monthly Update
Hey everyone. I’ve started to think about how I am managing this Substack, and I have done what I think to be a good job putting out a number of thought-provoking articles on subjects I have knowledge in. I haven’t been publishing for the last week due to both spending time with family over the 4th and travelling for work, but next week we should be back to normal. I’m thinking about writing an article about Threads, Meta’s Twitter competitor, and its pros and cons. Certain readers will no doubt already have a good idea as to what I might say, and hello to you.
Anyways, as a result of my thinking, I’m going to put out a monthly update on what I am doing with both the Substack and other content. As many know, I also produce documentaries and write books, and want folks interested in all of it, because it all functions as a single body of work for me.
That in mind, I’m nearing the end of production on my new Very Important Documentary, Marx For Sale, in which I am examining the phenomenon of materialism being hijacked and transformed into idealism. The last thing necessary to do is filming the direct address segments, and I’m currently waiting on shipments for props/the set.
I’m also in NYC currently, filming a CPI doc about the legal system’s targeting of the poor. I’m here until Wednesday, then I’ll be in Michigan a few days, then I’m headed back home to work on these things.
I’m also in the process of working on a new documentary on the self-help industry, similar to what I did with Less Sucks and the old overpopulation doc. So far, it’s a lot more robust than the original and I think everyone will enjoy it a great deal.
To support any of this, one option is upgrading your subscription on Substack to paid and is, of course, very appreciated. That link takes 20% off the normal subscription price. Of course, paid subscriptions are totally optional, I do not paywall content.
Similarly, for a little more flexibility and to appear in the credits of my documentaries, there’s http://patreon.com/importantds or http://patreon.com/petercoffin. Finally, if you’d just like a nice place to chat, check out my discord.
Excited to bring you more work and thanks a ton for sticking with me.
-Peter

I follow your content closely and appreciate the update. I’m particularly excited about the self-help refresh. One aspect of that discourse I’ve seen morph in the past few years is that now there’s all this “business coach” content for entrepreneurs/entrepreneur wannabes/artists. It all seems very similar to self-help and multilevel marketing speech to me, but rebranded and resold for those who want to escape the 9-5 and achieve “financial freedom” (some even use anti-capitalist language/aesthetics, which is very interesting). Social media coaches often fall in this category. They start supposedly giving you tips for increasing your client base or whatever, but they quickly veer into self help stuff (believe in yourself, overcoming imposter syndrome, etc). Also the whole manifestation shit that The Secret has turned into. Anyway, just putting it out there, I’m endlessly fascinated by self-help stuff and would love to hear a more of marxist critique ❤️.
